Blue Island English Manor Brown Ale (2018)

This month I want to show a can that I picked up at the Popular Culture Association Annual Meeting in Indianapolis. I gave a paper on Heurich, but also attended a number of interesting sessions. One of the more interesting was a panel on

Hyperlocalism

Hyperlocalism is information oriented around a well-defined community with its primary focus directed toward the concerns of the population in that community rather than focused on larger event. Local news coverage is often hyperlocal. I've discussed how micro breweries use their local ties a great deal. My September 2017 COM, for example, showed Maryland's 7 Locks Brewery's brand "Surrender Dorothy" which played on the long-familiar graffiti on a bridge over 495 near the brewery that made fun of the Mormon Temple nearby. My February 2018 COM is a Bunny Man which is named after a local scary story which encourages 'legend tripping" by local teens in northern Virginia.

Many micros use the same tactic, far too many to list. Anheuser-Busch tried to do something similar in 2017 when they changed the label on Budweiser to reflect states where they had breweries. So along with their "America" cans, there were cans for Ohio, New Hampshire, Virginia, etc.

Blue Island

Blue Island Beer Company is based on Blue Island, Illinois. The image on the can shows

The brewery uses locally-made railroad spikes to make their beer taps.
